VILLAGE TEKOA YREXAKÃ
Tekoa Yrexakã Village Project
Located in the southern region of the city of São Paulo, with the Engenheiro Marsilac district as its district, Aldeia Tekoa Yrexakã is located close to the Capivari River. According to the indigenous people, until the 1950s, there was a village of the same name in this region and, due to the impacts caused by the installation of the railroad that crosses the traditional territory, as well as other land pressures exerted by non-indigenous people, many Guarani had to abandon the area and move to other villages, such as Tenonde Porã (Dam) which, little by little, became the main village in the region.
In 2015, in the midst of the movement to reoccupy this territory, the Yrexakã relatives returned to inhabit the village, which is currently much sought after for activities ofecotourism and adventure tourism, as well as trails that lead to many bathing spots and waterfalls along the Capivari river.
For visitation, follow the Norms (Normative Instruction n.03/2015, of June 11, 2015) found on pagehttps://tenondepora.org.br/aldeias/tekoa-yrexaka/(Visitation plan).
The project
My first visit to Aldeia Tekoa Yrexakã took place in June 2018. I took some clothes and toys, which were received with great gratitude for the memory. I left there thinking that I could do something more to help and, since then, I've been making visits.
Aldeia Yrexakã is made up of 15 families – approximately 65 people – and about 25 animals, including dogs and cats. Planting at the site is limited to rice, guarani corn, beans, cassava and some herbs for collective consumption. Today, they survive through Bolsa Família aid and the sale of ethnic items. In addition, they receive a medical visit once a week or once a month.
After talking with Cacique Júlio and his wife Lúcia, I was able to better understand the needs of the Village, and I proposed the following:
• Food collection and monthly distribution of the following items:
– Rice,
- Sugar,
- Wheat flour,
- Bean,
- Corn meal,
- Milk,
- Noodle,
- Tomato Sauce,
- Oil,
- Salt,
– Feed for dogs and cats.
• Volunteers for assistance:
– Agronomist
– Dentist (already working)
– Clinical Physician
– Nursing Professionals (Nurses)
– Veterinarian (already acting)
• Collection of T-shirts, or funds for their purchase and manufacture, in order to increase income from sales of own items.
• Production of signs to identify the village, along the path, up to the entrance to the site.
• Structuring the existing space to adapt it to a classroom.
• Purchase of tools for daily use in the Village.
All work expressed here is voluntary and non-profit for those who have proposed to help the cause, all being aware and in agreement.
